Elton John set to speak out for gay rights as promoter confirms Russia gigs will go ahead

Sir Elton John is primed to speak out in support of gay rights in Russia after speculation that his concerts in the country would be cancelled was dismissed.

The singer is due to perform in Moscow tonight (December 6) and Kazan on Saturday (December 7) but Russia's laws on homosexuality reportedly put the shows under threat.

It is illegal to promote homosexuality to youths in the country and John said that he would "say something meaningful from the stage" regarding the issue.

It seems the musician will get his wish after the promoter of the Russia shows confirmed in a statement that the two gigs will definitely go ahead. They said:

"Despite the groundless rumours spread by the internet and media that Elton John's concerts in Russia could be cancelled, the organiser assures you that Elton John's shows in Moscow and Kazan will go ahead as planned."

Madonna meanwhile was the subject of a recent lawsuit after speaking out in favour of gay rights during a gig in Russia, but the case was dismissed.
