GG unveils dazzling art-house video

Official music video accompanies debut solo single

Spellbinding singer GG is to release her debut solo single, and her first release in English, on May 5 with the hypnotic 4 Days. The Russian talent, a creative powerhouse who is already a familiar face in her home country, has produced a fittingly flamboyant promo for the song, which is the lead track to her new EP. In it, the soon-to-be-star – whose real name is Nastya Palchikova – is seen with elaborate make-up, like a paint-spattered Pierrot as she whirls around a decaying apartment. Although this is the first time the Moscow-based performer has gone-it-alone, GG has already built a solid reputation fronting Russian Indie-pop band Sukhie touring extensively including the occasional London date.

Her music is as captivating and unconventional as the story of her early life. She developed her musical gifts as a youngster growing up in Saratov close to the river Volga, studying the cello at a local music college from the age of eight.

She was soon writing her own songs but by 13 her life was turned upside down when her father was killed by the Russian mob. Within months, she had fled her home with little more than her beloved cello and a handgun for protection.

There followed a spell sheltering in an abandoned building without heat or water, and it was only the kindness of a woman from a local market which kept her fed. Despite her chaotic circumstances, she managed to continue attending school and practising her music.

Eventually returning home she managed to graduate from music college and went on to study scriptwriting, before taking her first steps as a professional musician when she formed Sukhie in 2009.

Now she is making a bold move on her own with what she describes as a “rather unexpected” new direction with English language recordings of chilled electronica. Describing what her music means to her, she responds: A mix of good old everyday routine with an archaic madness flowing in the veins of each modern motherf***ker.”

GG is already a regular visitor to the UK as she continues working on the script for a TV serial for a British production company, having already devoted 18 months to the project. And she plans to play in London in the not-too-distant future – shows which she promises will be like “a boiling ocean of positive energy filled with hungry, viral sharks of grieving sorrow”. Her way with words is as extraordinary as her life – and her music.

The single 4 Days is released on May 5.
