Kate Jenkinson features in President Street's new music video

Press Release: April

President Street return with a new single, and it is as daringly modern and original as we have come to expect from the collective that just keeps on surprising.

President Street, the Australian pop fusion collective, are back with a new single on June 22nd, and it promises to be as beautifully unique as ever. The single comes accompanied by a new music video, and its message and artistic direction have made it a success of epic proportions.

‘Need You Now’ starts in characteristically President street style with lethargic synths and a confident drum beat. It is not long before a female voice is introduced, and the tone of her vocals is truly beautiful. The song builds up until we reach the climax, a punchy and emotional chorus. ‘I Need You Now’ ring out the vocals, and no one could dare doubt dare the conviction in her voice.

It is a song about reaching your limit, it is one last desperate plea to be saved from total mental demise. It is haunting, and relatable, and real. The song comes alongside a music video that so perfectly sums up these ideas. Directed by Peter Nathan, a student from The Victorian College of the Arts in Melbourne, and starring actor Kate Jenkinson who is currently starring in ‘Wentworth Prison’, the video is a real cinematic masterpiece.

It plots the mental deterioration of Kate Jenkinson (the main character) as she becomes ever more desperate. It starts off naturistically, and as the lyrics become more worrying, so does the video. It descends into what can only be described as an arthouse nightmare, Kate is gagged, covered in paint, and tortured – all whilst attempting to escape. It really is a masterclass in how to successfully imbue a music video with symbolism.

Born in Melbourne, it was not long before Peter Moses, the man standing at the front of this alternative collective, experienced real tragedy. Following the untimely death of his mother, father, and sister, Pete found himself working as a first year lawyer becoming increasingly dissatisfied with the monotony of everyday life.

On a whim he decided to move to Hong Kong and work in a bar and it was here that he randomly jumped on stage and started playing the congas with a Latin band that were playing, despite his lack of any prior musical education or practise. This decision then irretrievably changed his life.

The band then asked Pete to play with them more permanently, however he had realised that music production was what really interested him. He bought garage band and taught himself to create ad layer sounds.

Pete used music production as a way to deal with the childhood trauma that he had suffered. It is because of his decision in Hong Kong that we now have another single from this Pop fusion collective that just keep on surprising.

Riding on the success of their previous EP ‘Involuntary Action’, Pete and his team are back once again to prove that there is no limit to their ingenuity and creativity. ‘Need You Now’ is being released on the 22nd of June and with new music in the pipeline this collective shows no signs of slowing down.
