An Interview With Kalpee

With Millions of streams under his belt, and a voice so good you’ll be pleading to hear more, Kalpee is ready to be a real summer sensation…

Having racked up over 12 million streams since his Debut single ‘No One’ was released last May, it’s safe to say that urban-pop artist Kalpee is a pretty big deal. He is now back with his new single ‘Colourful’ which is set to be released August 31st. We sat down with him to talk inspiration, future plans, and the origin of his sound.

Hi Kalpee! So we hear your new single ‘Colourful’ is dropping on August 31st … Can you tell us a little bit about the track?

Well firstly I’d say colourful is the start of a new sound for me, I’ve been experimenting for a while with my music, trying to find ways to incorporate my accent and my culture music, “calypso and soca” into my overall sound. Colourful is simply about beauty in difference, it’s about being not only true, but proud of you being you. I’m a big advocate for individuality and self-love and I think it’s important for us to stop hiding behind the boundaries set by others, let your colours shine cause ain’t nobody like you.

Given the success of your debut single ‘No One’ (over 12 million streams and counting!) it’s clear that you are a pretty special artist. How does it feel to be racking up those kind of numbers?

Well firstly, I’m really happy to hear you guys think I’m a special artist, that makes me feel super nice, but it’s crazy to see people appreciate the music the way they have so far, Tano and I had absolutely no expectations when we released “no one” in fact the reason we released it on our own at the time was cause we were told it sounded like everything else and that there was nothing special about it, everything happens for a reason though, so I’m so grateful we went with our gut on that one. There’s a lot of energy, a lot of love that goes into music, at least for me and there’s no greater feeling than to see the listeners feel the love.

Is there any new music in the pipeline already….? What can you listeners expect in the future?

Definitely, I wish you guys could hear all the music I’ve got on my phone, but all in good time. There’s so much we’ve been working on and I can’t wait for you guys to hear it.

You are performing at The Color Run in Wembley next month, how are you feeling about being a part of an event like that?

This is the first time I’d be performing for an event like this, so I’m not gonna lie I’m a bit nervous but that’s all part of it, I’m super excited to be a part of Color run UK, especially because they promote individuality, I think it’ll be a magical experience for me and a magical event on the whole, can’t wait to see the energy in that atmosphere.

When did you decide that you wanted to pursue music professionally?

I’ve been involved in music for a while now but I think over the last two years I really made up my mind that I wanted to be an artist, it’s always scary with music because it’s a really difficult industry to shine through in but I don’t work a day in my life when I do music so I know it’s the right decision.

Do you have any plans for anymore live performances?

I know the team has been working on this for sure so there’s definitely gonna be more live performances coming up, I love performing live so I hope they’ve got some stuff up their sleeves, guess we’ll see.

There is a real musical hybridity to your work and it just works so well. Where did your sound originate from?

I’d say my sound is something that I’m still experimenting with but it’s a mix between pop/rnb, and my culture music calypso and soca out of Trinidad and Tobago. I’m just trying to “do me” as much as I could when it comes to my music, more so now than ever so we’ll see where it goes and how it grows.

Do you have any advice to those artists who are just embarking on a career in the music industry?

I think it’s an exciting time to be an artist because music is making an impressive comeback, at least in my opinion, these younger artist are killing it out here. If Music is something you seriously want to do, do it for the right reasons, do it to inspire the other youths looking on, you can be a real influence with music because it’s such a powerful tool. Being an artist isn’t easy I promise you that, you gotta have thick skin, you have to work extremely hard but I say go for it, don’t ever let anyone get in the way of your dreams, you’re here to live your life so don’t let’s anyone else live it for you. Go do you.

And finally… who are your biggest musical influences?

Bob Marley, David rudder, Miguel and Chronixx

Riding high on the success of his Debut release, Kalpee is now gearing up for the release of his next single ‘Colourful’ on August 31st. With its hybrid musicality and strong rhythmic pull, it is ready to take its place as 2018’s summer anthem…

Check him out on....
