Having spent 2018 in the studio with the likes of Boy George, David Grant, and Benny D (of Powerstudio), rising star Jamie Hannah is now getting ready to release his brand new single ‘Sound of My Youth’ alongside a ‘Sound of My Youth DJML vs. Benny D Remix’ on February 15th. Since 2017 Jamie Hannah has been working with Benny D, an award winning producer who has worked with artists including Stormzy and Kylie Minogue, to produce his debut E.P which will be released this year.

Along the way he has garnered the attention of some of the industry’s most revered professionals, and for the past few months he has been collaborating with the world renowned Boy George. Brought into the project by Benny D, Boy George has been consistently impressed with Jamie Hannah’s voice, even going as far as saying that he’s never heard a voice like his.

Boy George, who is currently on tour with Culture Club, spoke to the crowd at Wembley about Jamie Hannah, and has featured Jamie and ‘House of Truth (the single that they collaborated on) on his Instagram. The upcoming single, which is set to be released on Boy George’s label just before the summer, has been coined a ‘big summer smash’ by Boy George himself.

Jamie Hannah has also gained a fan in the shape of Oscar award winning actress Dame Emma Thompson, who, after hearing ‘Sound of My Youth’ declared that: “The potential in this young artist is breath-taking. This song is sensational, spectacular and wonderful.”

“Crying out for sunshine // still excepting rain” sings Jamie Hannah in his unforgettably smooth tone at the beginning of ‘Sound of My Youth’, and in a moment sums up the sentiment of the single. The track tells the age old story of a past relationship that you just can’t seem to forget about, and memories that continue to cause pain regardless of the time that has elapsed.

Jamie Hannah’s pure and emotive voice perfectly encapsulates the nostalgia and melancholy of the song meaning that the track is felt as much as it is heard, whilst the lyrics, which focus on the analogous use of water, document the main protagonist’s feelings of ‘drowning’ and loss in a truly emotional way.

The track begins simply with a collection of dreamy, laidback synths before it’s quickly taken up a notch by the inclusion of a weighty and pulsating drum beat and Jamie Hannah’s commanding vocals. ‘Sound of My Youth’ gives Jamie Hannah the opportunity to properly showcase the extent of his vocal range, and demonstrate his expert technique and power.

Classically trained in opera at the Royal College of Music, there is a level of control to his tone that is acquired only after extensive vocal training, and the power of his lower range is mirrored in his falsetto, which is no mean feat. His voice rises and falls throughout the track, at times sensitive, and at times powerful. He has a masterful understanding of dynamics which results in a track with real complexity, and the expressive nature of his singing only deepens the sensitive vibe of the track.

So what’s next for this breakout star? Well, with a run of live performance already scheduled, and whispers of new music already in production, you’re not going to want to miss what Jamie Hannah gets up to next…
