Rachael Sage’s latest release sees her come full circle, and acknowledge her resilience in the face of the ultimate adversary.

Following her recovery from her cancer diagnosis in 2018, Rachael Sage reached all the way back in time to the beginning of her career, taking inspiration from fellow indie label-owner and outspoken lyricist Ani DiFranco. Her live cover of DiFranco’s best-loved song, ‘Both Hands’ comes at a particularly meaningful point in Sage’s life - she used the original song as part of a playlist she listened to during her recovery which kept her “determined and strong”. A year later, it was a natural fit for her album, Character (coming Summer 2020). The performance in this live video is therefore all the more tear-jerking, and the congratulatory excitement at the end of the take between the musicians in the studio is very much understood.

Already heralded as “musically unexpected”, Sage’s arrangement takes the staccato guitar of DiFranco’s original and transposes it into a beautiful string quartet, putting her unique stamp on this quietly outspoken cover version.

This cover follows the equally gorgeous ‘Bravery’s on Fire’, a universal anthem about finding strength in vulnerability which premiered in the US and the UK in American Songwriter and LOCK Magazine respectively.

Soon to come from Rachael Sage is 2020 album, Character, a 12-song collection recorded during cancer recovery. Character was co-produced by Sage and Grammy® winner Andy Zulla (Kelly Clarkson, Rod Stewart), and contains the 12 songs she recorded while recovering from her treatment, which she describes as “the most humbling mountain I’ve ever had to climb.”

Recorded with engineer Mikhail Pivovarov and Zulla at both Carriage House Studios and her home studio in NYC, Character features diverse material that Sage recorded over the past year as she began to process her cancer experience. As a whole, the collection reflects on such concepts as gratitude, identity, compassion, authenticity, optimism, and mindfulness. Concepts which, as Sage reflects, “ultimately constitute any individual’s character – and may comprise the difference between living a life that makes the world a better place or one which perpetuates suffering.”

‘Both Hands’ premieres 10th January 2020, and Character is out Summer 2020.
