You can’t keep a good man down. In the face of global quarantine, Blanks has returned stronger than ever. The massive shift in day-to-day routine has actually been the source of inspiration for the “over-excited music boy”, whose YouTube channel has over 1.2 million subscribers to date. With all Europe dates - including Brighton’s The Great Escape festival - successfully rescheduled to May 2021 the musician had plenty of time to think and reflect on the way he strikes today’s crisis – resulting in the release of the exuberant 'Favourite Nightmare'.
Only Blanks could take an observation this sombre and astute and explore it (with all the integrity this musician has come to be known for) in such an exuberant track like ‘Favorite Nightmare’. With his debut single - an 80s version of Post Malones ‘Better Now’ - currently going viral on TikTok, the groovy bassline and 80s-style synths of ‘Favourite Nightmare’ are very much in keeping with the strengths of this YouTube sensation-turned-pop star.
The one-man powerhouse takes to tackling the confusing and disorientating feelings in the fallout of a break-up in ‘Favourite Nightmare’. The line, ‘can’t get you out of my head’ could not be more appropriate here - Blanks once again puts his musical know-how to good use in this upbeat song, with Blanks’ vocals and poetic lyrics at the helm. Beginning with the use of a “telephone” effect (so that the song sounds exactly like one of the songs on the radio of the car Blanks describes in the first verse), the song is kicked into gear by the cry of ‘1, 2, 3, let’s GO!’ immediately injecting Blanks’ energy and enthusiasm into the tune. The chorus melds euphoric instrumentation with the frustration of the lyrics as Blanks struggles to stop thinking about his ex. This makes for an interesting contrast and shows Blanks once again to be able to put a positive spin on everything, even the wildest of emotional rollercoasters.
