Florence Welch on music hiatus: 'I was spiralling and wasn't making myself happy'

Songstress Florence Welch has admitted that a nervous breakdown ended up inspiring the songs that make up her group's new album.

During a revealing interview with BBC's Zane Lowe, the flame-haired frontwoman explained that going from taking no time off to having a significant hiatus caused her to 'spiral':

"'Ceremonials' and 'Lungs' all blurred together, we didn't take any time off. It was a decision to have a year off. In the year off, I was still going out and going to events but something wasn't quite right, I was spiralling a bit. I wasn't making myself happy. I wasn't stable."

She went onto add that her 'on and off again relationship with drinking' only made the year off more chaotic, but she was able to channel this into her band's new album, which she described as incredibly personal: "It was a really vulnerable time for me when we first started making the record and because of that it's the most personal record I've ever made."

Florence + the Machine's next album, entitled 'How Big How Blue How Beautiful', is due to be officially released later this summer on June 1.
