Florence Welch named the greatest woman in rock

Florence Welch has been named the greatest woman in rock by listeners of XFM.

The radio station ran a poll to find the top lady in rock, with the Florence + The Machine frontwoman coming out trumps.

She beat off competition from the likes of Alison Mosshart and Skunk Anansie's Skin, who came second and third in the list respectively.

Elsewhere on the list, Paramore's Hayley Williams came in at No.8 whilst nu-folk star Laura Marling landed at No.19.

When she was asked by XFM about what it means to be a female in rock, Florence Welch said: "It is about doing something unexpected for someone who is perhaps more feminine. Perverting the idea of femininity - managing to be vulnerable and powerful at the same time is a big thing in performance - really feeling like you've seen someone giving a big part of themselves over to the audience."
