Gary Barlow hoping to create long-term careers with new TV show

Gary Barlow has appeared to take a swipe at the X Factor by suggesting his new TV talent show will offer contestants more than just short-term contracts.

The singer's new endeavour Let It Shine is due to launch on the BBC this weekend as a panel of judges put together a boyband to feature in a new musical based on Take That.

Speaking to the Guardian, Barlow said he hopes to create long-term careers out of the show - and he hinted that his old stomping ground the X Factor doesn't offer enough security for participants post-programme.

He said: "This is for a job, it is not someone waving a contract. The record business is very hard now I can’t even predict what is going to be successful or not.

"But with this I was able to sit there and say the reason you are here today is a job. We are going to give you an opportunity to play around the UK eight shows a week. By the end of the year I hope these will be the start of careers of years to come."

The show meanwhile will feature Barlow, Dannii Minogue, Martin Kemp and Glee's Amber Riley, while Graham Norton and Mel Giedroyc will host. Its first show will broadcast on BBC One on Saturday (January 7) at 7pm.
