Music world reacts as George Michael dies aged 53

Music stars across the globe have paid tribute to George Michael after the star passed away due to heart failure at the age of 53 on Christmas Day.

The singer's publicist confirmed the Brit "passed away peacefully" in Goring, Oxfordshire. Wham! bandmate Andrew Ridgeley said on Twitter he was "heartbroken".

Sir Elton John added to the tributes, writing online: "I am in deep shock. I have lost a beloved friend - the kindest, most generous soul and a brilliant artist. My heart goes out to his family and all of his fans."

Madonna said: "another great artist" has left us while Robbie Williams wrote: "Oh God no …I love you George …Rest In Peace x."

Boy George said: "He was so loved and I hope he knew it because the sadness today is beyond words. Devastating. What a beautiful voice he had and his music will live on as a testament to his talent. I can't believe he is gone. I hope the Buddha will hold him in his arms."

James Corden said on Twitter: "I've loved George Michael for as long as I can remember. He was an absolute inspiration. Always ahead of his time."

Sam Smith meanwhile added: "@GeorgeMichael. Words can't express how much you and your music meant and means to me. Please play his music as loud as you can today..."
