George Michael defends Olympic performance of new single and tells press to "f**k off"

British icon George Michael has hit back at criticism following his Olympic Closing Ceremony performance (August 12) and told the press to "f**k off" for slating his supposed self-promotion.

The star came under fire for treating the live audience and viewers at home to a rendition of his new single 'White Light' at an event that was meant to celebrate the UK's greatest hits.

He took to social networking site Twitter earlier today (August 14) to defend his decision:

"Morning everyone! Had a GREAT time at the closing! I hope you are not bothered by the press reports of my scandalous 'promotion'!!!"

"Please join me in telling them to fuck off ! It was my one chance on tv to thank you all for your loyalty and prayers, and I took it. X And I don't regret it. Xxxx"
