Glee's cover of 'Friday' explained

The creator of 'Glee', Ryan Murphy, has explained his decision to include a cover of Rebecca Black's 'Friday' in tonight's (May 10) episode.

On the show, the track is performed by the characters Sam, Artie and Puck, and Murphy explained to The Hollywood Reporter that it was purely a case of embracing the current trends in popular culture:

"The [glee club] is hired to perform songs for the prom and they were told by the principal to please do popular songs that the kids know."

Rebecca Black became an overnight sensation when she released 'Friday', but the overwhelming reception has also exposed the bad side of 'going viral' as the 13-year-old singer and student has since received death threats. Murphy added:

"It's songs that supposedly 17-year-olds are performing for other 17-year-olds,"

"I think younger kids have a definite reaction to that song. The show pays tribute to pop culture and, love it or hate it, that song is pop culture."
