Brand speaks on Perry divorce, says it clouds "what's really important"

Russell Brand has spoken publicly about his divorce from pop princess Katy Perry for the first time.

The British actor was met with a series of questions while at the Winter TCA press conference and although he answered  - albeit in a rather abstract fashion - he asked journalists to question whether it was really "newsworthy".

When asked how he has been doing since the split, Brand explained: "[I am] quite well, thank you. Are you asking because of recent events? Well I suppose what you're doing is you're making the mistake of seeing time as linear."

"The brilliant American author Kurt Vonnegut, he'll tell ya that if you imagine reality as experienced simultaneously, events become redundant."

He went on to stress that events in his personal life shouldn't be the concern of the world's media and he doesn't want the breakdown of his marriage to cloud "what's really important":

"I don't want to further celebrate the overly elaborate, brittle plastic structures of nonsense that are constantly fired into our minds to distract us from what's really important. So if I'd done something actually newsworthy... then I'd cover it. But if it was just more lacquered nonsense, designed to distract us from truth, then I would wisely ignore it."
