Kelly Clarkson has opened up about how her career has changed over the years and has spoken frankly about the use of auto-tune, vocal talent contests and how she's written a song for another artist that she now wants back for herself. 

The 'Because Of You' powerhouse told London's Metro newspaper that she probably would have done well as a contestant on The Voice, but wouldn't have been successful on The X Factor because of her girl-next-door appeal:

"I’d have done OK on [US show] The Voice but I’m not sure about The X Factor. They’re looking for that person who walks through the door and is super captivating. I walk in and people say: ‘You remind me of my cousin.'"

When asked about artists' extensive use of computer enhanced vocals in modern popular music, Clarkson explained that "there’s a lot to be said for performances that are raw and emotional and not perfect."

"When I hear Since U Been Gone or My Life Would Suck Without You, I love the songs but the vocal is so compressed it kills me. I understand why people use it for texture but I grew up listening to Patsy Cline and Aretha Franklin – they weren’t perfectly ‘on’ all the time. However, if you listen to Ain’t No Way by Aretha Franklin, you’ll think: ‘Oh, that’s how you do it.’"

Not only is Clarkson an incredible singer, but she also pens track for other "rangy singers" and admitted that there's one song in particular she's desperate to get back for her own album, adding:

"There’s a song I’m hoping doesn’t go on a girl’s record because I want it for myself. I’m a rangy vocalist, so I get asked to write big songs for other rangy singers. Sometimes it’s hard because the songs are like my babies."
