Kelly Clarkson says The X Factor is nothing more than a "door" to the industry

American Idol winner Kelly Clarkson believes that talent shows such as The X Factor merely provide singers with a "door to get into the industry" rather than a guaranteed career in the spotlight.

She performed on the programme in London over the weekend and spoke to Xtra Factor presenters Olly Murs and Caroline Flack about the contestants' potential longevity:

"The show is your door to get into the industry and it's what you do from there. As long as contestants own what they are and don't try to be something else [they will last]."

The 'Because Of You' hitmaker added that it's important as a performer to sing about what you know, and with conviction, as an emotional performance is more believable and helps connect an artist with their audience:

"Sometimes the most technically perfect voice is vanilla. I dont think you've ever had your heart broken, you dont sound like you've had your heart ripped out of your chest!"
