Kelly Clarkson almost rubbished hit song

American songstress Kelly Clarkson wasn't a fan of 'Since U Been Gone' after first hearing it.

The 30-year-old singer included the international hit single on her 2005 album Breakaway, but not until she'd added a rockier edge to it.

Clarkson wasn't convinced by the track's ultra poppy sound and persuaded producers to add a few more guitars riffs to the song before she performed it.

Speaking on her official YouTube channel the American Idol winner explained: "When I first got that song I didn't actually like it. It didn't have any guitars really on it and the lyrics weren't catered to anything I would really say. I actually flew to Sweden to work with Dr Luke and Max [Martin] and they ended up catering it towards me. they were excited about putting guitars on.

She added: "The label were a little, 'you're from American Idol, what are we doing with guitars'; they were freaking out, so that song really evolved after we got hold of it and made it something I would really want to sing and be proud of."

Clarkson is proud of how popular 'Since U Been Gone' has become since its release and is taken aback by how many music lovers have embraced it's mainstream sound.

She said: "People really gravitate towards that song. Even indie rock artists love that song. People who love jazz. People from all kinds of genres love that song. I've always kind of been a little puzzled by that because it's so pop!"
