After much speculation, it has finally been confirmed that pop superstar Lady Gaga will perform her forthcoming new single live at the 2013 MTV VMAs.

This year's ceremony will be held on August 25 at Brooklyn's Barclays Center and a press release from MTV cemented the news:

"Gaga will make her triumphant return to the stage at this year's show, performing the new single off her hotly anticipated 'ARTPOP' album before a star-packed crown at Brooklyn's Barclays Center ... not to mention millions of fans watching around the world. She's the first performer announced for the big show."

MTV then shared the exciting update via its official Instagram account and posted a link to the photo shown below along with the caption: "BREAKING: Performing LIVE at the 2013 MTV #VMAs..."

The Twitter account for MTV has been retweeting posts from her Little Monsters around the globe who have expressed their joy at the fact that their idol will perform live on the night after recovering from hip surgery for the past few months.

One follower referenced the rumoured title of Gaga's comeback single and wrote: "I can already hear the crowd cheering. I hear the Applause. #LadyGagaAt2013VMAs."

Another added: "The second coming of Jesus Christ is taking place on August 25th, at the VMAs. #LadyGagaAt2013VMAs."
