Lily Allen among #GETHEARD campaign supporters encouraging more female songwriters

Lily Allen and Naughty Boy are backing a campaign initiated by Beyoncé's songwriter, Carla Marie Williams, which hopes to encourage more female songwriters.

The campaign kicked off with an event in King's Place, London yesterday (June 30). It has been put together with PRS for Music which represents 130,000 songwriters of which only 22% are female.

Grammy-nominated Allen, who has one of the most distinctive voices in British pop music, recently released a brand new album, "No Shame," which hit iTunes' Top 10 in the UK within hours of its release.

Her chart success started in 2006 with the single "Smile" off her debut studio album "Alright, Still". The track went to No. 1 in the UK Official Singles Chart, and has been certified Gold in both the UK and US. Subsequent singles, such as Platinum-certified "The Fear," hit the top spot in both the UK Singles Chart and Billboard's Dance Club Songs

Speaking about the #GETHEARD campaign, Allen said: "Having spent 13 years working in this fast moving and ever-changing industry, I am only just beginning to understand the intricacies of how things work myself.

"I’m sick and tired of seeing artists, particularly young females being taken advantage of. It’s time for things to change, I want to be a part of that.”

#GETHEARD provides the UK’s female songwriters, producers, artists, rappers and MCs aged 16 - 30 with the opportunity to showcase their original songs to A&R executives and industry professionals.
