Linkin Park: 'I think we actually kept metal alive'

'Crawling' rockers Linkin Park have revealed that it's amazing to hear people say they were one of the first hard rock bands they got into.

The group's frontman, Chester Bennington, told Metal Hammer magazine that he often has people coming up to him on the street with the compliment:

“I met a kid a few days ago who said, ‘You were the first rock band I ever listened to’ and I hear that all the time. Every one of them was either, ‘Your band was my first record.’ Or, ‘Your band is the reason I’m playing music.’”

He added that the first few times this happened, it was like "the first time where I felt like we were the band that people looked at in the way that I look at Deftones, Metallica and Stone Temple Pilots."

Bennington went onto explain that while his band has enjoyed incredible success, there was also criticism and people suggested they had jeopardised the 'integrity' of the metal genre, which he refutes completely: “I think that’s really funny – just those words, ‘the integrity of metal.’ In my opinion we actually kept metal alive.”
