Will Smith has paid tribute to the late actor James Avery.

The 68-year-old, who played the character Uncle Phil on The Fresh Prince of Bel Air alongside Smith, died on December 31 following complications from heart surgery.

The news shocked lovers of the cult 90s TV show and Smith has now posted on his Facebook a tribute message to Avery.

He said: "Some of my greatest lessons in Acting, Living and being a respectable human being came through James Avery. Every young man needs an Uncle Phil. Rest in Peace."

The actor and rapper also uploaded a photo of himself with the cast of Fresh Prince, adding that it was the last time he was with Avery. The image can be seen above left.

Co-star Alfonso Ribeiro, who played the part of Carlton Banks in Fresh Prince, initially led the tributes by saying:

"I'm deeply saddened to say that James Avery has passed away. He was a second father to me. I will miss him greatly."
