Drake has revealed that he may have had a part in footballer Jermain Defoe signing for Toronto FC.

The England international confirmed earlier this month that he will cut his ties with Tottenham Hotspur to join the Canadian team in February.

The move turned heads somewhat as the 31-year-old is still highly regarded and some doubters will see a relocation to North America as a move backwards.

However, Canadian Drake told the Toronto Sun that he actually may have had a role to play in encouraging Defoe to try his luck with the MLS team.

He said: "I don't know if I had an influence on him coming here. I think that all I did was give him the necessary information about a city he didn't know much about. I told him how great it's been to me, and how great I assumed it would be to him. We had a great conversation. We built up a personal relationship.

"I'm excited to see him begin his career here. I just do what I can."
