Music world pays tribute to guitarist Paco de Lucia after death

A host of musicians have paid tribute to Paco de Lucia after the flamenco guitarist passed away.

The renowned Spanish musician died aged 66 after suffering a heart attack on a beach in Cancun, Mexico.

His death was confirmed today (February 26) by the mayor's office in Algeciras in southern Spain, where de Lucia was born.

The guitarist released over 20 studio albums and he worked with the likes of Chick Corea and Al Di Meola.

Musicians have been paying tribute to de Lucia on Twitter, with Yusuf Islam - formerly known as Cat Stevens - writing: "Sad to hear Paco De Lucia has passed away. May God show mercy to him and bring comfort to his family."

Joe Bonamassa added: "Some very sad news from Mexico. Rest in peace Paco de Lucia. One of the greatest guitarist and musicians of the 20th century."

Dream Theater guitarist John Petrucci said: "Today we mourn the loss of one of the world's greatest. May you rest in peace Paco de Lucia. 'Friday Night In San Francisco' remains one of the most influential albums of all time for me as a guitarist."
