Sky Ferreira: 'People should stand up for themselves more'

Singer Sky Ferreira has revealed that she wishes more artists would stick up for themselves when faced with pressure from record labels.

The rising star explained to Gigwise that it's important to stand your ground so that your creative outlets aren't blocked or pushed in other directions at the hands of record executives: "I know it's a bit scary and it depends on the situation, and you don't want to get shelved by your label or have your own people telling you you're f****d, but I spoke out because I was already kinda screwed."

"The only thing I really had for me was to stick up for myself. I think it is important to stand behind what you believe in and do what you want to do. In your gut, if you feel something is wrong, you should just do it. If someone feels like that, they should stand up for themselves."

"I can imagine people trying to make that happen, but at the end of the day, you have to be willing to fight for it, but sometimes you have, like, a gun held to your head. You never know the situation I guess."

Ferreira also recently confessed that she is often victim to online abuse from strangers, telling her followers that the constant criticism she receives is 'exhausting' to endure: "I’m exhausted of (more than some) people telling me how I should look or be if I want to be a ‘pop star’ & how they think it’s okay to say vile & (sexually) abusive s**t to me on a daily basis over the internet. I’m not only writing about myself... because almost every person has to deal with this. It’s a shame because I now feel like I can’t connect or directly speak with true fans.”
