Japan girl group AKB48 attacked by saw-wielding man

Two members of the Japanese girl group AKB48 have been injured after being attacked by a saw.

Rina Kawaei, 19, and Anna Iriyama, 18, were left with cuts after a man lunged at them as they met fans in Takizawa on Sunday (May 25).

The cuts were sustained on their hands and heads, whilst a member of staff was also left with lacerations.

Police have confirmed that a 24-year-old man called Satoru Umeta has been arrested.

A scheduled gig for tonight (May 26) has been cancelled, as well as some fan events.

AKB48 were founded in 2005 and they have attracted global interest for their number of members, which is reportedly 140.

They have a theatre in Tokyo, where different members of the group regularly perform.
