Sam Smith: 'I don't know how to write a happy song'

'Stay With Me' singer Sam Smith has revealed that he struggles to write positive and upbeat songs, but it's not something he does consciously as he much prefers to go inside of himself and address the things that are unsettling to him.

Speaking to Capital FM recently, the hitmaker admitted that he gravitates towards 'darker' subject matter and it's always challenging to confront:

"I don't know how to write a happy song! There's actually two that are on the album that are quite happy! I challenge myself, it's important for me to challenge myself and take risks. When I was writing this album, I didn't want to write sad songs."

"So to actually go inside myself and pluck out all these horrible depressing thoughts was a risk and was a challenge and I did it. My challenge now, to write for the second album, would be to write happier. But I think I need to be in a happier place to do it. That would be a challenge for me."

He also told Digital Spy that he isn't afraid to approach topics most artists seem to be wary of: "I'm saying s**t which artists would veer away from, and I think that's what's powerful about it. We're in this industry; everyone's so conscious of that. Even my A&R was like, 'We can't call it 'The Lonely Hour' because it's too depressing; people will read that and think it's too depressing'."
