Sam Smith's debut album goes straight to No.1 in the midweek chart update

'In The Lonely Hour', the highly anticipated debut album from 22-year-old singer Sam Smith, has shot straight in at No.1 this afternoon (May 28) during the midweek update.

The Official Charts Company has confirmed that Smith's record is around 20,000 copies ahead of this week's No.2, which is Coldplay's previous chart-topper 'Ghost Stories' as it slipped one place today. 'Ghost Stories', meanwhile, is currently the fastest-selling artist album of 2014 so far after selling 168,000 copies during its first week on sale.

Michael Jackson's posthumous offering, 'Xscape', has also dropped one position to sit at No.3, Paloma Faith's 'A Perfect Contradiction' is at 4, and Paolo Nutini's 'Caustic Love' rounds off today's Top 5.

Elsewhere on the UK Top 40, Mariah Carey's 'Me. I Am Mariah… The Elusive Chanteuse' has made an impressive appearance at No.6, Peter Andre's 'Big Night' has debuted at No.20, and Röyksopp and Robyn's collaborative mini-album 'Do It Again' charted at No.12.
