Rik Mayall, star of 'The Young Ones', dies aged 56

British actor and comedian Rik Mayall, best known for his role as Rick in 'The Young Ones', has died at just 56-years-old.

The news was confirmed by Mayall's manager to the press earlier today (June 9) and a statement was issued by the company, Brunskill, which read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the death of Rik Mayall who passed away this morning. We will be issuing a further statement in the fullness of time."

Mayall also famously starred in the movies 'Drop Dead Fred' and 'Guest House Paradiso', and also appeared in the well-loved show 'Blackadder'. 'Blackadder' producer and writer John Lloyd told the BBC: "It's really a dreadful piece of news. He was the most extraordinarily good actor as well as being an amazing stand-up comics. Apart from being great company, he was a great professional."

Tributes have already begun pouring in and singer Peter Andre tweeted: "Very sad about Rik Mayall. :(( I grew up on the Young Ones in OZ and Bottom Comedy genius..... Sad times."

Hurts member Theo Hutchcraft shared a message that read: "Devastating news about Rik Mayall. A true national treasure who brought so much wild and wonderful joy to the world. Rest in paradise Rik. x"
