George Harrison memorial tree killed by beetles

A tree planted in tribute to Beatles star George Harrison has fallen foul of beetles.

The ironic twist occurred in Los Angeles' Griffith Park, where a sapling was planted in 2004 in honour of the late Beatle.

However, Council officer Tom LaBonge has told the LA Times that an attack of tree beetles has killed off the memorial.

A new tree will be planted at a date yet to be decided.

A plaque at the base of the tree reads: "In memory of a great humanitarian who touched the world as an artist, a musician and a gardener."

George Harrison passed away in 2001 due to cancer.
