A number of fans at a Keith Urban concert this weekend were taken to hospital as a result of alcohol consumption.

The country star played at the Xfinity Center in Mansfield, Massachusetts on Saturday (July 26), but the gig was seemingly marred by alcohol issues.

A joint statement released by the town's police and fire departments confirmed that 46 concert goers were treated at the scene and 22 were taken to hospital for mostly drink problems.

Over 50 fans were taken into 'protective custody' by police for what was described as "alcohol related issues".

The statement added: "Last evening's Keith Urban concert was not anticipated to present with the volume of issues handled."

Urban, who is a judge on American Idol, released his last album 'Fuse' in 2013.
