Hilary Duff on returning to music: "I was missing that part of my life"

American actress and singer Hilary Duff has been discussing her recent return to music.

The former ‘Lizzie McGuire’ star released the single ‘Chasing The Sun’ last week – her first song since 2009’s ‘Any Other Day’.

Her last studio album was 2007’s ‘Dignity’ which was followed up by the compilation ‘Best Of Hilary Duff’ in 2008.

Whilst chatting to Billboard for their Pop Shop podcast, Hilary revealed that she was taken by surprise by a burst of musical inspiration whilst heavily pregnant with her son, Luca.

She explained: “I was about to give birth, I was actually pregnant, and I had two months to go... and I just started writing a lot out of nowhere.”

Duff continued: “I don’t know if it was because I was all hormonal and emotional, but I started writing and I took it as a sign that I'm missing that part of my life.”

Whilst getting back into music Hilary’s marriage to retired ice hockey player Mike Comrie came to an end in January – which the 26-year-old star described as “a very difficult thing to go through.”

The couple’s separation had initially affected the sound of Hilary’s upcoming new album as she described the early recording stages being “a lot heavier and a lot darker because I think I just needed to get [my feelings of separation] out, and once I did get that out, a lot of fun came.”
