One Direction have reached the 50 million votes milestone in MTV's Hottest Summer Superstar poll.

The entertainment broadcaster is asking fans to vote via Twitter for who they think is the top music act of the summer.

One Direction, who have been an ever-present at the top of the list, have now bypassed the 50 million votes mark.

At the time of writing, they have nearly 51 million tweets.

Justin Bieber is second with almost 42 million votes, whilst Lana Del Rey follows with 20.5 million.

'ARTPOP' icon Lady Gaga is fourth with 20.3 million nods and 5 Seconds of Summer are fifth with a tally of nearly 18 million.

The poll will close on August 27 and the results will be announced on August 30.
