Marie Miller on hopes for the future, her track '6'2', and her musical past

Folk singer-songwriter Marie Miller has been heavily involved in music since childhood, but is now steering things very much in her own direction and recently had her single '6'2' featured on 'Dancing With The Stars'.

Pressparty caught up with the talented musician and songstress to talk about her creative process, influences, and her future ambitions.

1. You began singing at just 7-years-old and by the age of 12 you had joined the family band.

Was music something you grew up with and how much of an influence was it during your childhood?

Music was definitely something that I grew up with, and it really shaped my childhood in a unique way. I was never shy on a stage, and I think that was mostly because I was on stages so early in my life.

2. What’s your creative process like when writing a new song? Do you start with lyrics or do you come up with a melody first?

I generally write lyrics and melody for a chorus or a hook, and take it from there.

3. Your new song, ‘6'2’, was recently featured on ‘Dancing With The Stars’. It’s a romantic song, but at the same time appears to be about expectation and the way people often seem to put too much thought into the kind of person they want to date. Was this intentional?

Yes, '6'2' is definitely tongue in cheek. I wrote it to tease my friends after they talked about their 'perfect guy'. The music video is here! It came out a couple weeks ago. I really love how it turned out, and it was truly a joy to make.

4. How old were you when you wrote your first song and what was it about?

I wrote my first song when I was thirteen years old, and it was about heaven actually. I then ventured to write fifty songs about a boy I liked.

5. What inspires you musically? What inspires you to write songs?

People in my life and people I read about in books. Almost all my songs are inspired by someone who has reached me in a real way.

6. Your track ‘Cold’ did well on the Christian music charts - is faith something that has been a big part of your life? Do you find it manifesting in your new music?

Certainly! My Catholic faith is the most important thing in my life. I think my faith is woven into all my new music although I don't write "Christian music".

7. What has been your favourite moment to date in your music career and what are your ambitions for the future?

Great question. I think my favourite moment so far was performing at the Pandora Showcase stage at SXSW. The energy on stage was incredible, and I had that "dreams come true" moment as I watched the audience dance to my music. For my future ambitions, I would love to tour in Europe, and I would love to play at Telluride Bluegrass Festival one day.

8. You classify yourself as a folk-pop artist, but do you ever feel pressured to change your sound or fit more comfortably into just one genre?

I do, but I think my producer Paul Mabury and I are creating a unique sound on these records that hopefully people will really enjoy.

9. What are you listening to at the moment?

I am singer in a wedding band this weekend so Aretha Franklin, Journey, Stevie Wonder, and all the great danceable bands.
