MTV VMAs audience figures drop by 1.8m

This year's MTV VMAs was viewed by 1.8 million less people in the US than the year before.

The glitzy event took place in Los Angeles on Sunday (August 24) and its big name performers included Beyoncé and Taylor Swift.

Data shows that only 8.3 million people tuned in across the States - a decrease of almost 2 million from the previous year.

However, it performed well in the 12-34 demographic and it topped cable ratings.

The show lacked some of the shock that Miley Cyrus and her twerking brought to the ceremony last year.

However, the US star brought a homeless man to the event to raise awareness for homelessness in the country.

Cyrus later said that in view of her VMAs show in 2013, she wanted to use her fame for something positive.
