Joan Rivers dies aged 81

Groundbreaking comedienne Joan Rivers has sadly died today (September 4) at 81-years-old.

The legend underwent a throat surgery on August 28 in New York, but stopped breathing during the operation and she was subsequently put on life support due to the serious nature of her deteriorating condition. It has now been confirmed that she passed away this afternoon.

Her daughter, Melissa Rivers, issued a statement about her mother's passing, which reads: "It is with great sadness that I announce the death of my mother, Joan Rivers. She passed peacefully at 1:17pm surrounded by family and close friends. My son and I would like to thank the doctors, nurses, and staff of Mount Sinai Hospital for the amazing care they provided for my mother."

"Cooper and I have found ourselves humbled by the outpouring of love, support, and prayers we have received from around the world. They have been heard and appreciated."

Sharon Osbourne, whose daughter Kelly co-presented 'Fashion Police' with Rivers, tweeted a message about the sad news: "We've lost a true legend today and an amazing woman - a pioneer. She opened up the arena for women in comedy. My heart goes out to Melissa and Edgar. Love and respect from the Osbourne family to you both."
