Former Big Time Rush star on 5SOS and the boyband stigma: 'They really don't need to worry at all'

Kendall Schmidt, of Heffron Drive fame, spoke exclusively to Pressparty earlier this afternoon and addressed the stigma that comes with having your group described as a boyband by the press.

The musician was formerly a member of Nickelodeon band Big Time Rush so is very familiar with the term, and confessed that while he sees acts such as 5 Seconds Of Summer falling into that category in the media, he doesn't think they need to worry about being referred to as a boyband because their music speaks for itself:

"Well, I think that the press always lump any project like that into that category - it's nothing new. When we first started (Big Time Rush), they refrained from calling us... well, we refrained from calling ourselves a boyband because of the negative connotation that goes along with it."

"At a certain point, we realised that yeah, we were a boyband. If you looked up in the dictionary what a boyband is - it would usually involve singing and dancing. I think 5 Seconds Of Summer is a band of boys, but I wouldn't say they're a boyband, no. I also don't think they need to worry about it at all. If you want to call them an interpretative dance band, it doesn't matter. They're doing OK!"

The full interview with Kendall Schmidt will be online later today (September 15).
