Sam Smith: 'Revealing my sexuality was a risk'

British singer Sam Smith has revealed that being openly gay in the music world is always a risk and he initially worried about how people would respond to him and his debut album because of his sexuality.

Speaking to the Daily Star newspaper, the 'Lay Me Down' sensation explained that he had to be open because otherwise he would be living a lie and also not representing the community, but confessed that it was still very daunting to lay himself bare like that in front of the world:

"I've been very open from a very young age about it. The thought of people not being able to hear the music I make scared me, because that's my dream. That's been my dream from a very young age. So it was a risk but I was proved completely wrong."

He also said that being looked at as a representative for the LGBT community is strange as he wants to appeal to many different groups, and doesn't want to be pigeon-holed or limited in that respect:

"What I meant was I don't want to limit to just one community. I want to reach everyone, gay people, lesbians, transsexuals, straight people, Catholics, anyone."
