La Roux on her latest album: "I most likely won't make any money out of it"

British synth pop artist La Roux has made some frank comments about the state of the music industry and the impact it has had on her financially as an artist.

In an extended statement published by Digital Spy, La Roux – whose real name is Elly Jackson – opened up about the lack of financial return she will make from her current album, titled ‘Trouble In Paradise’, and her previous smash hit records.

Jackson revealed: “I spent two years on ‘Trouble In Paradise’ and I most likely won't make any money out of it. The only money I will make is from radio play. All the money I've had up until now is from radio. I think people find this really, really, really hard to believe. It's not a lie, it's just the way it is.”

She also divulged that she often finds it difficult to make ends meet: “It's fine as long as people don't think you're a millionaire, which people sort of do. Until you start getting to much larger venues, if you've got a five-piece band like I have, you find it very difficult to break even. We don't break even. Thank God we're really passionate about what we do and we don't mind when we lose money.”

Another topic covered by Elly is the issue of how consumers are now listening to music. She explained: “I'm still coming to terms with music not being physical. It doesn't really matter how much I own in my phone or on my iPod or in my computer, I don't feel like I own it. Even if I've bought it, I don't feel like I own it. It just feels like a list.”

The ‘In For The Kill’ star concluded: “I don't think we're instilling the value of music into a younger generation. It's also really scary that people can listen to such low quality files and not get a headache. It freaks me out.”
