Bloc Party's Kele on Katy Perry's 'Birthday': 'I liked it, but it's completely throwaway'

Kele Okereke, of Bloc Party fame, recently sat down for an interview with Digital Spy and opened up about the pop music that's being made at the moment, which he described as 'completely throwaway'.

The 'Banquet' hitmaker explained that he isn't too fond of disposable pop music, but admitted that it's harmless and there have been a few widely-played tracks, such as Katy Perry's 'Birthday', that he has enjoyed:

"I mean, I don't listen to Miley Cyrus. I don't have any beef with her or anything. I don't have a problem with modern pop music, if I hear it and I like it it's fine, I like it. There was a Katy Perry song that I heard a few months back that I really liked called 'Birthday', but I realised I liked it because it reminded me of a Prince song. But you know, I liked it. The instrumentation was nice. It was completely throwaway and completely about sex, but it was pretty, it was nice to listen to for three minutes."

"I don't actively seek out pop music because you hear it, you're bombarded with it. I heard that Katy Perry song everywhere: the gym, on the car radio, driving past and in shops. I don't need to seek it out because it's kind of there. If it's good, I don't mind it. If it moves me, I don't mind it. It's kind of only a problem if it's not good and then you're bludgeoned into submission into liking it because you hear it all the time. That's a little bit oppressive."
