Bob Geldof says Band Aid 30 single made 'one million quid' in five minutes

Bob Geldof has revealed that the new Band Aid single made £1 million after only five minutes on sale.

A number of top acts including One Direction and Ed Sheeran recorded a new version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' at the weekend to raise funds for the battle against Ebola.

The tune went on sale digitally today (November 17) and Geldof, who organised the single alongside Midge Ure, told BBC Radio 4 that it is going very well.

He said: "From what we've seen from iTunes it's gone bonkers. Within four or five minutes we had a million quid."

A physical version of the single meanwhile will be released in about three weeks.

The first Band Aid single was released 30 years ago to aid anti-poverty efforts in Africa.
