Band Aid 30 track becomes fastest selling single of the year

The new Band Aid song has become the fastest selling single of the year so far in the UK after less than two days on sale.

The Bob Geldof organised charity project relaunched at the weekend to record a new version of 'Do They Know It's Christmas?' to raise funds for the battle against Ebola.

The likes of One Direction, Sam Smith and Ed Sheeran recorded lines for the tune two days before its release on November 17.

The Official Charts Company confirmed today (November 18) that the single has sold over 206,000 units since its release.

This makes it the fastest selling song of 2014 so far - a record previously set at 163,000 by Clean Bandit's 'Rather Be'.

The original Band Aid song sold 200,000 copies in two days back in 1984, whilst the 20th anniversary edition shifted almost 300,000 units in its first week in 2004.

The single is due to be released in physical form in a few weeks.

Official Charts Company boss Martin Talbot commented:

"Band Aid 30 reflects all that is great about the British public and the British music scene. Everyone expected a strong start from Sir Bob Geldof and his team, but they have outperformed expectations with a truly exceptional first day’s sales which has put it on course to being a record setter once more in 2014."
