Mel B's husband Stephen Belafonte has shot down rumours that he assaulted the singer.

The Spice Girl sat out of the first part of the X Factor final on Saturday (December 13) for an undisclosed illness.

She was taken to hospital as Tulisa replaced her, but the judge resumed her role on Sunday (December 14).

However, some suggested that she had bruising and could have been the victim of domestic abuse from husband Belafonte.

Mel B also reportedly did not wear her wedding ring on the show.

Her husband took to Twitter today (December 15) to slam the gossip, writing:

"I don't usually respond to Twitter msgs but I will respond to comments of hitting my wife which I think are quite disgusting un true!

"Mel was very ill a bunch of doctors helped her get better if fans can't just relax B4 being negative they r not real fans of @OfficialMelB."
