Mary Lambert: 'It's really important to de-stigmatize mental illness in any form'

Songstress Mary Lambert has opened up about how she uses her music to address mental health issues

During a new interview with the Huffington Post, the 'Secrets' hitmaker confessed that she wants to help try to remove the stigma attached to discussing and addressing mental illness. Lambert told the publication that everyone has their own baggage and it's important to treat it with respect and freedom:

"I think it's really important to de-stigmatize mental illness in any form. I think there's a lot of people that are carrying around guilt and shame and baggage for sh*t that doesn't matter. Everybody is going through something, everybody has had something that they've had to overcome."

She went onto add that creativity is incredibly therapeutic for her: "For me, self-expression has been crucial to survival. If I couldn't write or create music or sing, I'd be dead. Writing has been the solution for a lot of my issues. The biggest part of any struggle is our connection to humanity - to each other - it's a matter of finding a safe space within people who you trust and love, who want the best for you. Find a community of people that care about you."
