American Sniper named highest-grossing 2014 film in US

American Sniper was the highest-grossing movie released last year in the US.

The Clint Eastwood directed Navy Seal flick was unleashed in December and has taken in $337.2m (£223.7m).

The film, which starred Bradley Cooper, was more popular than The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1.

That movie has taken in $336.8m (£223.4m) from the box office.

American Sniper was nominated for six Oscars at February's ceremony.

However, it only won the Sound Editing prize.

Transformers: Age of Extinction was the highest-grossing movie of 2014 on a global level.

It took in $1.1bn (£665.6m) in foreign markets compared to American Sniper's Sniper's $140m (£93m).
