Charli XCX: 'I wrote a song about masturbation as a feminist statement'

'Boom Clap' sensation Charli XCX has revealed that she wrote a track about masturbation as a feminist statement to show that women need to reclaim and own their bodies.

Speaking about her song 'Body Of My Own' to The Times newspaper in Britain, the beauty explained that she wanted to put across the point of view that if women are going to be sexualised, they may as well take back the power and be the ones to sexualise themselves:

"'Body of My Own' is about masturbation, but it's a feminist statement more than a song telling you to put your hand in your pants, because girls should own their own bodies. If they're going to be sexualised, they should sexualise themselves and not let someone else do it for them."

Earlier this month, meanwhile, Charli XCX told Marie Claire that songwriting is something that happens spontaneously for her: "It's a total mess. I am very spontaneous when I write; it kind of just comes out. I never think about what I'm going to write about first... it just sort of comes out like word vomit. Actually, my songwriting process is very selfish - I don't ever think about my audience. I just think about myself."
