Sum 41's Deryck Whibley on alcoholism battle: 'I'm lucky to be alive'

Hitmaker Deryck Whibley, of Sum 41 fame, has opened up about his battle with alcoholism and confessed that he has managed to overcome it successfully after a long and hard struggle.

Speaking to Vice.Noisey.com, the rocker admitted that while the entire situation is unpleasant, he is glad it happened when he was young enough to turn his life around and get back on track:

"I'm glad it happened now and not when I'm, like, 50, because my body wouldn't have been able to handle it... However, now I'm feeling better than I've ever felt. I'm healthier. I'm in the best shape of my life."

"The doctors said I was lucky to be alive and that there was still a chance I could die... I do look back and think about how much worse it could have been. I could have had way more health problems than I had, but my liver is fine! Everything shut down before any more damage could happen. To walk out of there alive, without cirrhosis or needing transplants, you know, it could have been worse."

Whibley, who was previously married to Avril Lavigne, went onto add that he turned to drink in order to deal with the pressures of his career as he found he didn't have enough energy to give his all: "I drank to wake me up and get that fake energy. There were a lot of times I didn't even want to drink, but I was so tired that shots of Jack were all I could do to get onstage."

He was recently pictured in the recording studio with 5 Seconds Of Summer and band member Michael Clifford admitted that it was a dream come true moment.
