Avril Lavigne wants to raise awareness about Lyme disease

After her own battle with Lyme disease, Avril Lavigne is determined to improve public knowledge about the disease.

The Canadian star recently revealed that she was bed-ridden for five months from Lyme disease - a bacterial infection spread by ticks.

In a recent interview about her struggle with the infection, Avril explained: “I felt like I couldn't breathe, I couldn't talk and I couldn't move. I thought I was dying… It felt like having all your life sucked out of you.”

Now that she is recovering, Lavigne wants to spread awareness. She told Billboard:

“I need to talk about Lyme disease, because it's real, it's out there, it was a simple bug bite and it could happen to anybody.”

She added: “People need to know about it, because it's not talked about that much and a lot of the information that's out there is inaccurate.”

The ‘Complicated’ musician releases a new song, ‘Fly’, on April 16 for the 2015 Special Olympics World Games.
