Avril Lavigne: 'My Lyme disease was misdiagnosed as depression'

Singer Avril Lavigne has revealed that getting doctors to realise what was wrong with her when she started displaying the symptoms of Lyme disease was near impossible.

Speaking to 'Good Morning America' this week, the songstress admitted that getting her illness correctly diagnosed was incredibly tough and several doctors thought she was suffering from depression:

"I literally became bedridden last October. I was in Los Angeles and it was literally the worst time of my life. I was seeing every specialist and literally the top doctors and they would just... pull up their computer and be like, 'Chronic fatigue syndrome...' or, 'Why don't you try to get out of bed Avril, and just go play the piano.' It was like, 'Are you depressed?'"

She added: "This is what they do to a lot of people that have Lyme disease (because) they don't have an answer for them, so they tell them, like, 'You're crazy'." Lavigne eventually saw a specialist, who helped pinpoint the disease: "The thing is when you're a specialist you also really know the disease inside and out and you can diagnose through symptoms."
