Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran to perform at Global Citizen concert

A number of big names such as Beyoncé and Ed Sheeran will take to the stage at this year's Global Citizen Festival.

The free event is taking place at New York's Central Park on September 26.

It is being held to coincide with the UN General Assembly meeting, which is expected to discuss inequality, climate change and extreme poverty.

Also on the bill are Coldplay and grunge rockers Pearl Jam.

The gig has been organised by film director Richard Curtis, who has organised the Red Nose Day charity series.

He told the BBC: "In 2000 there were some millennium development goals that people like me, through my experience on Red Nose Day and Make Poverty History campaign, have been really obsessed with, which set out to do great big things in terms of health and poverty.

"They have been a really effective mechanism for extraordinary gains in those areas and these goals are coming to an end in 2015. They are launching a new set of goals that are much broader and include climate and justice."
