Ed Sheeran given 'outstanding contribution to music' honour

Ed Sheeran has been given an honorary doctorate from University Campus Suffolk.

The singer-songwriter was given the honour for his "outstanding contribution to music".

Sheeran, however, told the Press Association that university isn't everything.

He was speaking from experience, with the Brit leaving school at the age of 16.

He said: "I think there is a lot of pressure among young people. I definitely found it at school.

"I don't necessarily think university is what you have to do to get a job. A lot of [kids] end up in debt with a degree they didn't really need to get the job they want.

"We should encourage kids to chill a bit more. You don't have to go to university at 18, you can go off and travel for a year.

"Thailand's super cheap, you can get beers for like 15p. Just go and find yourself there. Hang out with people of a similar age and grow."

Sheeran picked up his honorary doctorate on Monday (October 19).

The Brit has released two albums to date, with his second coming via 2014's smash hit 'x'.
